Towards self-development!

Self-development… It can sound familiar, it can sound strange but what majority of us know about it is: it is important and I will take care of it one day. And then the day never comes. How about focusing on your self-development right here and right now for your own sake?

„MĂŠtro, boulot, dodo” /me.tʁo.bu.lo.do.do/ – sounds like a child’s nursery rhyme, but its meaning is much more serious.  This French expression („subway, work, sleep”) was created in 1968 by the French writer Pierre BĂŠarn, who wanted to illustrate in his poem the rhythm of everyday life for townsfolk and how it was full of repetition and monotony with no chance of adding any extra-activities to the daily routine.

Why am I mentioning this when the text is supposed to give tips concerning self-development?

Because a lack of time is our first excuse not to develop ourselves. Of course, there are also others…

I HAVE NO TIME

We are occupied almost all day long. The clock is ticking and we are always in a hurry because of professional commitments which should be completed, because of the duties at home that have to be done, sometimes because of children who must be taken care of.

How can we add other activities to this speeding carousel? And what should they be? Reading books? Going to the gym? Keeping up to date with the latest developments in our industry? Learning foreign languages? Jogging?

There are many methods and time management tips which have been created to help us avoid wasting time and use it as effectively as possible – listening to audiobooks on our way to home/work, learning languages by watching foreign films/series/programs in the original language, exercising while watching TV, reading a book while travelling by bus or train. Maybe not ultra-innovative but often forgotten and neglected.

I ALREADY KNOW ALL I NEED TO KNOW

There are people who have a false belief that they have finished their “work of art”. They graduated from schools – often the great ones. They have had rich experiences, read hundreds of books, participated in dozens of lectures, workshops and had all the training they think they need, so now they know everything… There couldn’t be anything more wrong. Development is a process and not the goal for a one-time acquisition.

At STATSCORE we complete our professional profiles by adding our monthly achievements. They don’t have to be amazing. Sometimes it’s a short webinar we participated in, even a book which helped us to solve a problem. We always treat it as a way to constantly develop our skills and knowledge.

I AM A PERFECTIONIST – ALL OR NOTHING

It is almost impossible to watch all the available videos dealing with the subjects we are interested in. Just like reading all the books concerning the problems that occupy our minds.

But if we read and watch a few of them, it’s already a great step.

We can, of course, open 50 tabs on a topic we would like to explore, but the result will probably lead to a feeling of demotivation and discouragement, caused by the vast amount of material that’s available.

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO START

There are many tools and methodologies that can help us to manage our development and describe the goals we want to reach. Let’s take a closer look at one of them called SMART (first used by G. Doran)

According to this acronym, we should start with a plan and make goals:

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-bound

So, are you still unconvinced about what direction we should take? I hope the decision is towards self-development!
