Motivation – where are you?

How did it start with motivation? A long story short – each key philosopher and scientist came with another answer. We can determine some general rules but what is most interesting here is: what keeps YOU motivated?

Once upon a time, there was a force derived from both the unconscious and unmet conscious needs of humans. It triggered energy that pushed people to overcome all kinds of obstacles. People adored it because it made them reach their goals.

Eventually, scientists started to analyse the reasons why. In 1907 Henri Bergson, the French philosopher, presented his concept of „élan vital” (,,vital impulse”), which according to him constituted the basis of our actions.

MASLOW’S TRIANGLE

In 1943 Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist created a triangular monument in relation to motivation so he could present his theory of the five human needs, starting with the most basic needs at the bottom: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization.

In 2000 another American psychologist, professor Steven Reiss presented in his book “Who am I? The 16 basic desires that motivate our actions and define our personalities” needs that according to his studies motivate people:

  • power,
  • independence,
  • curiosity,
  • acceptance,
  • order,
  • saving,
  • honour,
  • idealism,
  • social contact,
  • family,
  • status,
  • vengeance,
  • romance,
  • eating,
  • physical exercise
  •  tranquillity.

YOUR ANSWER?

We know that motivation can be both external and internal. But do we know exactly where motivation is and where it remains unseen by us?

  • in a huge salary?
  • in bonuses and rewards?
  • in getting a promotion?
  • in praise from our boss/superior/parent/partner?
  • in being admired?
  • in a satisfying relationship?
  • in a happy family?
  • in a joy derived from a satisfying work?
  • in making the world a better place?
  • in a feeling of a constant self-developing?

Where is our motivation? What makes us want to make an effort?
