STATSCORE’s eye on handball: part 9: PGNiG Superliga

No surprises for VIVE, 11 suspensions in Piotrków and a change of luck for Zagłębie Lubin, who won the first half in Gdańsk, but left the seaside town with no points gained. Whoa – what a matchday in PGNiG Superlige for whom STATSCORE is the official Data Provider. Let us recap, what happened this weekend.

Pogoń Szczecin – Orlen Wisła Płock 23:31 (11:15)

Pogoń Szczecin lost their fifth league match in a row. This time against last season’s runner-up, Orlen Wisła Płock.

The match’s top scorer was Pogoń’s Paweł Krupa – he scored 9 goals out of 18 throws. Krupa is the indisputable leader in number of throws made this season. He tried to beat his opponent’s goalkeepers 115 times (12.8 per match, 32 throws more than Marko Panić from Azoty Puławy who occupies second place).

Orlen Wisła Płock have won all of their 15 matches against Pogoń in the league and after the 9th round, they are in 3rd place in the league table with 21 points (7 wins and 2 losses).

Arka Gdynia – Energa MKS Kalisz 28:24 (15:12)

It finally happened! Arka Gdynia won their first league match of the season. Their opponents – MKS Kalisz planned to score an easy 2 points, but Dawid Nilsson’s players showed ambition and strength.

What was the main reason behind Arka’s win? Home goalkeepers – Maciej Pieńczewski (14 saves, 40% efficiency) and Mateusz Zimakowski (3 saves, 50% effciency) showed their ability and helped their team to a very important win. Both of them also saved, two 7-meter throws.

MKS are still trying to change the tide (they have lost 4 league match in a row).  Will it happen in the next round?   We don’t think so! The club from Kalisz will play a home match against PGE Vive Kielce.

PGE VIVE Kielce – Azoty Puławy 35:18 (16:7)

This was going to be a big match. This was going to be a test for VIVE before their Champions League game against Barcelona.  Azoty Puławy came to Kielce with only one league loss against Górnik Zabrze – their players wanted to show that they can compete as equals against the best Polish team.

They couldn’t be any more wrong! VIVE crushed their rivals by 17 goals. Statistics show the disparity between these two teams.

Throw efficiency: 65% – 35%

Goalkeepers efficiency 51% (!!!) – 22%

Fast attacks: 12 – 1

Missed throws 9-15

Turnovers 11 – 18

Everything about this match can be summarised by the slightly modified movie title: The Kielce Handball Massacre.

What was the last match Azoty lost by at least by 17 goals? On 4th of May, 2013 also VIVE beat them 49:21. Since then Azoty have played 177 league matches ( the match against Talant Dujszebajev was nr 178)

What can we say to the Azoty players? Maybe these lyrics from Chumbawamba song will help:

I get knocked down, but I get up again
You are never gonna keep me down

Górnik Zabrze – Stal Mielec 35:26 (14:10)

After the match against Górnik Zabrze, Stal Mielec became the club with the highest number of goals conceded this season in the PGNiG Superliga (292 in 9 matches, average 32,4 per match). The defence is their biggest problem, and Górnik Zabrze players seemed to know this all too well.

The team from the Silesian District won 35:26, and this means they are still the second best team in league. Their goalkeeper, Martin Galia, who came back a few weeks ago after serious injury, has saved 22 opponent’s throws in the 3 matches he has played and has the best saves efficiency in the whole league – 45,83%

It is very rare that in the second half of a match that teams score over 50% more goals than they did in the first half. This time it happened ( 1st half – 24 goals, 2nd half – 37)

Piotrkowianin – MMTS Kwidzyn 22:25 (11:13)

What is an acceptable rate for 7-meter throws efficiency? Let’s say 65%-70%. What was the teams 7-meter throws efficiency in the game between Piotrkowianin and MMTS Kwidzyn? 33% (home team 2/6, away team 1/3)!

For both teams it was a very nervous 60 minutes. 11 2-minutes suspensions for the players and 1 for the away team coach, 35 turnovers. That’s what made this match very chaotic.

Eventually, the 2 points went to MMTS, who played the last few minutes of the game better. Piotrkowianin scored the lowest number of goals in a league game since the 3rd of March, 2018 (21:25 against Wybrzeże Gdańsk).

Gwardia Opole – Chrobry Głogów 29:27 (14:12)

Before this match one statistic was very tricky. In the last four matches between Gwardia Opole and Chrobry Głogów, it was the home team who lost the match.  But this time, this series was interrupted

Gwardia Opole had the player that made the difference. Antoni Łangowski, played his best match of the season, scored 10 goals (83% throw efficiency) and led his team to victory. It is worth mentioning that Opole’s goalkeeper, Adam Malcher, saved 9 penalties this season (2 in this game). He remains the league’s best player in this statistic.

Wybrzeże Gdańsk – Zagłębie Lubin 29:25 ( 13:15)

It was the only match in this round where the team who were leading at halftime, lost the match in regular time (the 4th time it’s happened this season).

After a bad first half, Wybrzeże improved their shape and at the end scored 4 more goals than their opponents. Zagłębie’s biggest problem in this match were the powerplays. Wybrzeże had 9 2-minute suspensions (while Zagłębie only 4).
