Technology keeps powering sports entertainment

61% of Europeans say technology is a major lifeline in how they enjoy their favourite events, teams, and competitors, according to the Mastercard Sport Economy Index 2023.

Here are the top ways in which Europeans used technology for sports in 2022: to follow events remotely on social media, to watch multiple matches at once, to experience a sporting event via VR, to watch esports competitions via streaming platforms, and to listen to sporting podcasts. Learn more

In-person betting starts in Massachusetts

Sports betting formally begins at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31. in Massachusetts.

Anyone 21 and older who wants to bet on sports will have to make their wager at one of the state’s three casinos:

  • Encore Boston Harbor (Everett),
  • Plainridge Park Casino (Plainville),
  • MGM Springfield (Springfield).

Amazon acquires media rights to the 2023 World Baseball Classic

The fifth edition of the international baseball tournament will start on March 8. Amazon has picked up Japanese market rights to all games involving the Samurai national team.

Amazon’s Prime Video will be streaming Japan’s team games during the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March, as well as two warm-up matches. Learn more

UEFA reveals new format for Nations League from 2024

European football’s governing body Uefa has announced the introduction of quarter-finals and promotion play-offs to a revised Nations League.

The new expanded format will begin in September 2024.

There will still be groups of four but, for the 16 highest-ranked League A teams, the top two will qualify for a two-legged quarter-final in March 2025, with group winners facing runners-up. The winners of those matches will go into the ‘Final Four’ in June 2025. Read more

Will Ukraine boycott the Olympics 2024?

The International Olympic Committee said it would “explore a pathway” for athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete as neutrals.

“Our position is unchanged,” said Ukraine sports minister Vadym Guttsait. “As long as there is a war in Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be in international competitions.” Read more
