Football players and celebrities banned from betting ads in the UK

Notable athletes and top-flight footballers will no longer be able to appear on sports betting adverts in the United Kingdom.

The new regulations have been outlined by the Committee for Advertising Practice, and will come into effect on October 1, 2022.

The rules state that gambling and betting ads must not “be likely to be of strong appeal to children of young persons, especially by reflecting or being associated youth culture”. Read more

NHL expands sports betting deals to Canada

The National Hockey League has expanded its partnership agreements with betting companies Bet MGM and FanDuel to include Canada.

The two companies became the league’s official betting partners in 2018, and now, after the launch of legal single-game betting in Ontario, the deal has been extended to include Canada.

FanDuel and BetMGM now have the right to use official NHL branding and category designations in their wager offerings.

“Canada’s new sports betting landscape presents a tremendous opportunity to further fan engagement and continue our progressive approach with the sports gaming industry,” said Keith Wachtel, chief business officer and senior executive vice president at the NHL. Read more

Could football games last 100 minutes?

FIFA has been said to explore lengthening matches to last up to 100 minutes.

The issue of extending the time of football matches is related to the so-called called effective playing time (time when the game is actually being played), as compared to the real duration of the game. For example, according to a 2001 CIES study, Italian Serie A has 63.2% (under 60 minutes) of game time actually played out of the whole 90 minutes.

FIFA denied the rumours in an official statement:

Following some reports and rumours spread today, FIFA would like to clarify that there will be no changes to the rules regarding the length of football matches for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™️ or any other competition. Read more

LaLiga to launch streaming service in Indonesia and Thailand

LaLiga Pass, which was unveiled by the president of Spanish football’s governing body, will provide live coverage of all games held in the top-tier LaLiga Santander league and second-tier LaLiga SmartBank league.

The service will first become available on mobiles and TVs in Indonesia and Thailand.

Alfredo Bermejo, LaLiga’s digital strategy director, said: “One of the keys of the entertainment sector is to be able to offer a high degree of personalisation, to speak to each fan in their own language and to provide them with quality content adapted to their tastes and needs. We believe that LaLiga Pass, and all the technology behind it, is a big step in this direction and will be a great option for those who want to enjoy LaLiga and everything that surrounds it.” Read more

World Cup betting odds: who are the favourites?

29 countries have already qualified to take part in the World Cup, and the three remaining spots will be contested in June. Who are the bookmakers’ favourites?

According to BetMGM, Brazil is the favourite to win the 2022 World Cup (5-1), followed by France (11-2), England (11-2), Spain (8-1) and Argentina (9-1).

Who’s the least likely to win? Tunisia (350-1), United Arab Emirates (350-1)*, Costa Rica (750-1)*, and New Zealand (750)*.
