F1 extends Sky TV broadcast deal until 2029

Sky UK & Ireland will retain rights until 2029, while Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia will remain the exclusive broadcasters of Formula 1 until 2027.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said: “We are incredibly proud of our long-term partnership with Sky, and we are delighted to announce that we will continue working together until 2029, a very important commitment from Sky.”

The 2022 season has already broken viewing records with the average viewership reaching 1.7m, which is up 60% since the UK exclusive deal began in 2019, including 4.3m new viewers to Sky Sports F1. Read more

Italy amends betting rules to allow cash-out on all markets

Italy’s Ministry of Economy & Finance (MEF) has prepared new regulations to amend rules on fixed-odds betting markets for sporting events.

The new rules would allow Italian bookmakers to offer customers cash-out features across all betting markets, which had previously been available only for horseracing events.

NFL concussion protocols over scrutiny after Tagovailoa situation

The league has come under intense scrutiny after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in a dangerous incident.

The quarterback initially suffered a head injury during a match against the Buffalo Bills, but was allowed to finish the game. He then started the game against the Cincinnati Bengals, during which he was sacked by Josh Tupou, and suffered a concussion, after which he had to be taken to a hospital.

The decision to allow Tagovailoa to play after the initial injury spurred the NFL and NFLPA to open discussions about modifying the league’s concussion protocols, including a rule that would forbid players to return to a game if they demonstrate “instability.” Read more

Has Brazil’s legendary football shirt become a right-wing symbol?

As Brazil is waiting for the second round of the election disputed by left-winger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, the divide in the society is demonstrated even by the famous football shirt.

“The shirt has become stained with political meaning since 2014,” says Mateus Gamba Torres, a history professor at the University of Brasília. “The green and yellow shirt has become a symbol of those related to Bolsonaro’s government, which means a good part of the population no longer identify with it.” Read more

Hummel reveals toned-down Denmark kit design

The sportswear giant has released a red monochrome kit that makes its logo barely visible to protest against human rights abuses.

Hummel has also unveiled a black third kit to signify the ‘colour of mourning’.

‘We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation,’ the company said in an Instagram post. ‘We believe that sport should bring people together. And when it doesn’t, we want to make a statement.’

In response, Qatar’s Supreme Committee has released a statement insisting that reforms have been made to protect the rights of workers.

Qatar authorities have also hit back accusing the kit supplier of having their production based mainly in China, a country that has also been accused of breaking human rights. Read more
