(Un)known enemy. How can sports organisations prepare for future pandemics?

Without supporters and only in outdoor disciplines, European sport is slowly trying to recover from the pandemic. The fight is continuing to save funds from the sale of TV rights and to keep the consistency of event calendars established many years in advance. However, we should make it clear that the risk of further suspensions will not leave the sports business until the invention of an effective vaccine against the coronavirus. Learn more with STATSCORE!

As a competition organizer, are you able to prepare for such a future?

At STATSCORE, we believe that there are at least a few steps you can take:

1. Implement procedures and adapt competition regulations to the possibility of suspension.

2. Implement procedures and adapt competition regulations to the possibility of suspension.

3. Implement procedures and… Yes, it may seem funny, but it is the basis for further actions. It’s essential because you simply can’t be sure how long the next break may last. It can be longer than 2 or 3 months, and the games may not be able to reanimate themselves as they’re trying to do right now. That’s why you need to establish in advance the rules for determining the final table, promotion and relegation. You can do that by creating working groups for this purpose and carry out consultations to ensure that all participants accept the arrangements. If you don’t make such formal preparation to suspend the games, you’ll have to focus on these issues when they occur. And then, it will have to be done in a completely different atmosphere, as exemplified by the dispute over final standings in the Scottish Football Premiership. Such cases show that sport was not well-protected against the event of a stoppage.

4. Develop online broadcasting of your competitions. Even if the games are not stopped, they may have to continue without the presence of supporters. Give the fans the opportunity to watch them at home. Thanks to technological developments, it has never been easier.

5. Check the possibility of organizing official esports competitions. It’s not about trying to copy the atmosphere of a real-life event (this can’t be done), but about keeping fans interested and showing your sponsors that you’re acting. STATSCORE tools, such as LeagueCenter, which we can make available to the competition organizers without any fees, can help you with this.

6. Be creative and optimistic. Pandemic is an experience that the entire sports business can use as a lesson. In the last few months, the entire sports community has had to face a crisis that this business has never seen in its history.  Let’s be prepared in the future!
