STATSCORE’s Customer Success Team look back at 3 great performances from 2020!

Happy New Year! 2020 was tough on so many different levels. This made these individual performances from the world of sport even more amazing. Let’s take a closer look with STATSCORE!

Where to start? 5 of us from CST locked in a small room for almost 3 hours, drinking coffee and eating way too many biscuits. All we needed to do was agree on 3 great performances. When we took our seats, it looked like an easy task. But with everyone having their say, we ended up looking at stars from across the world of sport. We covered Boxing, Tennis, Football, Golf, Athletics and Cycling, to name but a few. Below, you can read about the 3 that made the cut!

Lewis Hamilton – F1

I think this was the only person that all 5 of us agreed had to make the list. All we can do here is repeat what’s been said in hundreds of column inches. After breaking the records for the most poles (97) the most race wins (94) and most podiums (163), he went on to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 7 World Championships.

There has been a lot of talk about how good the car is, but I always like to remind people that he has won the title with 2 teams and against 4 different teammates in the same car. And if this was not enough for 2020, he won BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year and was knighted. And CST believes, we have heard the last of Sir Lewis Hamilton. Number 8 in 2021?

Iga ĹšwiÄ…tek – Tennis

I can hear many of you saying: who? And even more of you not being able to pronounce the name of this young Polish superstar! I’m grateful that someone from Tennis made the top 3.

With the Grand Slams reduced to just 3 events in 2020, we still had 3 first time winners. On the men’s side, Dominic Thiem finally overcame the ‘BIG 3’ to win a maiden Slam. On the WTA, we had no less than 2 new winners from the 3 tournaments that took place. First, Sofia Kenin, won the Australian Open and, then Iga, conquered the French Open.

So why does she get the nod we hear you ask? First, let me say, it’s not because 4 of the 5 people locked in our little room were Polish, NO! It’s because it really was a fantastic individual performance, or should I say 7 in a row! It could be said that the other two first time winners, had been knocking on the door for some time. However, Iga won the French Open without dropping a set and, beating the world’s number 1 player along the way to winning her first, senior WTA tour title. An amazing feat! And we hope there’s more to come from Iga.

Tyson Fury – Boxing

Last but not least, Tyson Fury! There were a few contenders for the final spot on our list of 3. There was a very lively discussion about whether we could choose someone from a team sport but, in my humble opinion, Mr Fury rightly got the nod. It was just a few years ago that Tyson lost his titles and belts outside of the ring. It was a long road and, big ask for the unbeaten fighter to get back to the top of this brutal sport. But that’s exactly, what he did!

After a couple of warm-up fights, he took on the reigning WBC champion Deontay Wilder for his title. Deontay was another undefeated fighter and, one of the most powerful, punchers on the planet. Come fight day, Tyson came into the ring as the underdog, but after surviving a devastating knock-down, got up to earn himself a draw and a rematch. Tyson went on to dominate the second fight and fulfil his promise to win inside the distance! Once again, putting himself at the top of his sport. He starts 2021 still unbeaten and, looking forward to a mega-fight with Anthony Joshua. For what it’s worth, CST says don’t bet against him.
