Single-sports betting in Canada nears legalization

A bill seeking to legalize single-event betting was approved by Canada’s House of Commons, and will now advance to the Senate.

At the moment, horse racing is the only sports discipline that can be bet on as a single sporting event in Canada. Bets on other sports must include at least two events. Bill C-218, which was backed by members of all parties, would allow provinces and territories to regulate online and in-person wagers on individual events. Read more

Super League collapses before it even starts

Harsh criticism from UEFA, national football leagues, players, managers, and politicians caused the new project to fail within two days of its announcement.

Fans of the clubs and pundits have also reacted negatively to the Super League plans.

Faced with widespread public backlash, English clubs (Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea) began to withdraw from the project, followed by other participants. Read more

Arizona’s new law allows pro sports teams to partner with betting operators

Ten professional sports organizations in Arizona, along with 10 Native American tribes, have been authorized to partner with sports betting firms to launch wagering operations.

The state’s lawmakers passed legislation that will allow sports betting. The bill grants sports organizations (including Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Coyotes and Suns) the opportunity to apply for sports betting license. As license holders, the franchises will be able to sign agreements with specific betting businesses, which is expected to generate revenues for the clubs. Read more

Esports in the Olympics? IOC to hold virtual events ahead of Tokyo Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the first-ever Olympic Virtual Series, a slate of five esports events to be staged ahead of the Summer Games this year in Tokyo.

The Olympic Virtual Series will take place from May 13 to June 23 and include events featuring baseball, motorsports, cycling, rowing, and sailing videogames.

“The Olympic Virtual Series is a new, unique Olympic digital experience that aims to grow direct engagement with new audiences in the field of virtual sports,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement. “It encourages sports participation and promotes the Olympic values, with a special focus on youth.” Read more
