US men’s and women’s football teams to be paid equally under historic deal

The US Soccer Federation has announced that it reached an agreement to pay the US Men’s National Team and the US Women’s National Team equally, eliminating a contentious pay gap that saw female players earning less.

American football teams will share prize money from the World Cup as well as incomes from TV and sponsorship equally. The US federation has become the first one in the world to implement such a policy.

DraftKings launches sports betting in Ontario

DraftKings’ licence application in Ontario was approved six weeks after the Canadian province opened its sports betting and igaming markets on April 4.

DraftKings is the 12th operator approved for a two-year licence. The company will be offering online sports betting and igaming products to its customers.

“DraftKings’ entry into Canada with our online sportsbook and online casino products is a significant milestone in our expansion efforts as we reach nearly 40-percent of Canada’s total population,” DraftKings’ co-founder, chairman and chief executive Jason Robins said. Read more

FIBA bars Russia and Belarus from upcoming competitions

Russian basketball players won’t be allowed to take part in upcoming men’s, women’s and 3×3 world championships due to the war in Ukraine.

Russia and Belarus have been withdrawn from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers. Russia’s women’s teams have also been barred from taking part in the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022, and in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.

The decision of FIBA applies to upcoming 3×3 basketball competitions as well. Read more

China withdraws from hosting Asian Cup due to Covid

China has decided to resign from hosting the next year’s AFC Asian Cup, citing the pandemic.

The 24-team tournament was due to be held from June 16 to July 16 next year across 10 Chinese cities.

“The AFC acknowledges the exceptional circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the relinquishment by China of its hosting rights,” the AFC said in a statement. Read more
