Illegal betting reaches $1.7 trillion annually

According to a United Nations report, global illegal sports bets total up to $1.7 trillion each year. The illegal market is often used by organized crime groups for money laundering.

“Indeed, globalization, a huge influx of money, the rapid growth of legal and illegal sports betting, and technological advances transforming the way sport is played and consumed are making it increasingly attractive to criminal networks seeking to exploit sport for illicit profit,” the UN agency said in a statement.

FIFA launches new real-time analytics

A group of FIFA specialists are analysing real-time data of each game of the FIFA Arab Cup 2021.

Analysts are using the new FIFA Football Language, which has been over two years in the making. The new performance analysis delivers greater detail, new metrics, and ground-breaking insight. A similar approach is also planned for FIFA World Cup 2022. Read more

NBA executives expect uptick in Covid-19 cases to continue through Christmas

About 50 NBA players have entered health and safety protocols this season.

Team executives and health officials expect that this number will keep going up in the coming weeks due to the likelihood of more Covid-19 cases nationwide as people gather indoors for the holidays.

The league has said that 97% of its players are vaccinated, which means that just about 15 players are not. Read more

LaLiga agrees €4.9bn TV rights deal

Top-flight of Spanish football has ratified a five-year domestic TV rights deal with CVC Capital. LaLiga games will be broadcast by Movistar and DAZN over five years from 2022-23 through 2026-27.

The new contracts are the longest domestic TV rights deal ever signed by LaLiga representing an increase in value from the current cycle. Telefónica’s previous deal, signed in 2018, was worth €2.94 billion over three years.

Movistar and DAZN broadcasters will air five LaLiga matches per week. Read more 

IOC says there’s ‘nothing wrong with China as host’ of Olympics

US, Canada, the UK and Australia have all banned their officials from attending the Beijing Winter Olympics over alleged human rights abuse.
