Brazil fails to regulate sports betting market

The country’s outgoing president Bolsonaro didn’t sign the proposed regulations before the deadline expired on December 12.

The Brazilian government had two years (plus further two years of extension) to sign off appropriate regulations in relation to federal laws passed by the Senate. The deadline was December 12, 2022, however, Jair Bolsonaro, the outgoing president of the country, has opted not to sign them into law. Read more

European court backs UEFA over Super League project

European court of justice advocate general has stated that UEFA and FIFA are within their rights to impose sanctions on clubs that join any breakaway.

UEFA and FIFA had claimed that for the Super League project to take place, its organizers would first need approval from the governing bodies.

The Super League Company had started legal action against UEFA, saying it had breached EU law through this stance. Still, the ECJ has backed UEFA’s position, stating that UEFA and FIFA’s rules penalising clubs for joining a breakaway league are compatible with European Union law. Read more

GIG buys AskGamblers for €45m

Gaming Innovation Group will acquire AskGamblers from Catena for €45m.

The agreement applies to casino affiliate websites Askgamblers.com, Johnslots.com, Newcasinos.com and several smaller domains from Catena Media Plc.

The acquired websites generated revenue of €12.9 million in the first nine months of 2022 with an EBITDA of €8.4 million.

MLS signs TV deal with Fox Sports

It’s been reported that ESPN was unwilling to continue the long-standing partnership with the league.

Major League Soccer has agreed to multiple four-year agreements with media companies including Fox Sports and Univision, which will air games exclusively in the United States, and Canadian company Bell Media, which will show games on its TSN and RDS networks. Read more

Qatar attendance numbers fall short of expectations

Qatar welcomed over 765,000 visitors in the first two weeks of the World Cup falling short of the country’s expectations of 1.2 million during the tournament.

The organisers’ report stated that the first 17 days of the World Cup saw 765,859 international visitors come to Qatar. Cumulative stadium attendance at the first 52 matches was 2.65 million, the document added.

In June, Qatar predicted the World Cup would generate US$17 billion for its economy, lower than the previous estimate of US$20 billion. Read more
