Premier League extends £4.8bn TV rights deal

The Premier League has announced a three-year renewal of its deal with broadcasters.

The league has renewed a £4.8bn (over €5.5bn) TV rights deal with Sky, BT and Amazon, and the BBC, avoiding an auction that could have led to hundreds of millions being wiped off the value of the next agreement.

The EPL also decided to provide £1.5bn to the wider football “pyramid” over three years, and an extra £100m spread over four years to “extend support to areas of the football community particularly vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19” including lower league and non-league clubs. Read more

Tennessee becomes the first state to reach $1B sports betting mark

A total of $1,077,844,523 worth of sports wagers have been placed in the state since sports betting was legalized there in November.

According to the numbers provided by the Tennessee Education Lottery, the state has become the first to cross the $1 billion mark in online betting. As a result, the sportsbooks earned $92 million, and the state of Tennessee has collected $18.3 million in taxes.  Read more

IOC says Tokyo Games to go on despite protests

The IOC has insisted it is “moving fully ahead” with the Olympics despite the Japanese public opinion calling for the event to be cancelled.

“We listen but won’t be guided by public opinion,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said, adding “everything is telling us … that the games can go ahead and will go ahead.”  Read more

Champions League final moved to Porto

UEFA has decided that the Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City will be held at Porto’s Estadio do Dragao on May 29.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Turkey, the European football authorities have decided that the game has to be moved. At first, there had been talks about holding the match at Wembley Stadium, but UEFA was not able to secure relevant quarantine exemptions necessary for media and guests to be able to fly into London.
