Premier League teams to drop betting sponsors from front of shirts
20 EPL clubs have agreed to ban match-day front-of-shirt sponsorship deals with gambling companies following the end of the 2025-26 season.
Sports betting and betting brands will still be allowed on sleeves and hoardings.
Currently, there are eight Premier League clubs that show the names of betting companies on the front of their shirts.
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: “While the vast majority of adults enjoy gambling without harm, we can’t ignore the fact footballers are massive role models to kids.” Read more
NBA to cut expenses amid “economic headwinds”
The world’s top basketball league is going to reduce expenses and limit hiring, according to a report from The New York Times.
“Like other businesses in the US and globally, the league office is not immune to macroeconomic pressures and taking steps to reduce expenses,” said Mike Bass, the NBA spokesman.
David Haber, the league’s chief financial officer, has issued a memo instructing staff members to halt hiring, with limited exceptions, as well as cancel several meetings held offsite in favour of staging them virtually. Read more
SuperSport secures cricket media rights in 52 African countries
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the extension of its agreement with SuperSport International.
The South African-based pay-TV network will be broadcasting global cricket tournaments across 52 territories in Africa. The eight-year deal includes coverage of the men’s Cricket World Cup until the end of 2031, all games of 12 men’s senior events for the contract’s duration, and all matches from the next four years of women’s international events.
“There is a real opportunity for more fans to engage with ICC events and enjoy cricket across the 52 territories,” said Geoff Allardice, ICC chief executive. “Following the hugely successful ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 and the legacy left for women’s cricket in South Africa, I am confident that this strategic partnership will play a major part in building the momentum for women’s sport in the region too.” Read more

STS reports record-breaking quarter performance
The Polish-based betting group achieved wagering results off PLN 1.19bn (€255m), reflecting a 16% year-on-year increase on Q1 2021 corresponding results of 1.02bn.
STS President, Mateusz Juroszek, outlined that the group would continue its strategic reorganisation, prioritising Polish home market growth initiatives.
“In line with our expectations, in Q1 2023 we achieved very good operating results. We recorded significant increases in key indicators related to our business. STS customers remain strong and willing to place bets,” Juroszek explained. Read more
WTA will resume China tournaments after boycott over Peng Shuai allegations
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) will return to organizing tournaments in China in the autumn after suspending all events in the country in 2021.
Former doubles world number one Peng said in November 2021 she was “forced” into a sexual relationship with former China vice-premier Zhang Gaoli. The WTA then suspended the tournaments in the country over the uncertainty over the player’s safety.
“After 16 months of suspended tennis competition in China and sustained efforts at achieving our original requests, the situation has shown no sign of changing,” the WTA said in a statement. Read more
