First Super Bowl hosted by state with statewide legal sports betting

Football fans inside State Farm Stadium were able to use in-game betting apps from one of the 17 operators in Arizona to place wagers on the game as it was happening in front of them.

The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles was the most popular betting event since the wave of legalization was launched in the US.

The state of Arizona has fully embraced wagering since sportsbooks were allowed to start taking bets in September 2021. The Arizona Department of Gaming reported that $617 million was bet on sports in November 2022. That’s a 32.2% increase from November 2021. It was the second straight month with more than $600 million in bets. Read more

Manchester City charged with breaking EPL financial rules

The Premier League has released a statement saying it had charged Manchester City with more than 100 breaches of financial rules from 2009 to 2018.

During that specific period, City won the Premier League three times.

According to the league’s authorities, the club allegedly broke the rules over nine seasons by artificially inflating incomes and failing to provide accurate financial information.

“Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with” – reads the club’s statement. Read more

BeIN renews broadcast rights for CONMEBOL tournaments

Pay-television broadcaster BeIN Media Group has secured the rights to Copa Libertadores, CONMEBOL Sudamericana, and CONMEBOL Recopa.

These competitions all be shown live and exclusively on beIN Sports channels from 2023-2026 across 24 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Unibet becomes NHL’s betting partner in Sweden

The National Hockey League has named Unibet as an official league partner in Sweden in a multi-year deal.

Kindred Group plc and its flagship brand Unibet becomes an Official Partner of NHL Sweden by entering a multiyear agreement. Unibet will, as the first betting company in Sweden, leverage its Official Partner of the NHL designation to conduct dynamic marketing campaigns across the company’s digital betting offerings. Biden’s Super Bowl interview is off after failed negotiations with Fox

The American president has decided not to follow the recent tradition of sitting for an interview with the news network broadcasting the Super Bowl.

The White House and Fox failed to reach an agreement regarding the short interview which is usually the most-watched television event of the year suggesting simmering tensions between Biden and the network.

“As we said earlier, we had arranged an interview with FOX Sports Host Mike Hill & Vivica A. Fox with the President ahead of the Super Bowl and Fox Corp had the interview cancelled,” a White House official said in a statement to NBC News. “FOX has since put out a statement indicating the interview was rescheduled, which is inaccurate.” Read more
