Italian betting shops to remain in lockdown

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced that gambling venues and betting shops will not be opened until a further review scheduled for April 6.

Draghi, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on February 13, announced that betting and gambling venues would not reopen until at least early April.

In February, Italy’s gambling trade unions held protests urging for the government to lift the restrictions impacting 150,000 industry workers. Read more

MLB fans will come back to the ballparks this season

MLB teams are getting ready for the comeback of fans to the venues after playing the entire 2020 regular season in empty ballparks.

The league provided guidelines for allowing supporters back into ballparks this year. Social distancing and masks will be obligatory but no vaccine checks or negative COVID-19 test results will be required.

Fans will be allowed to come to the regular season games, provided that state and local health guidelines allow it. Read more

UFC partners with DraftKings in 5-year deal

Mixed martial arts organization UFC named DraftKings as its first official sportsbook and daily fantasy partner in the U.S. and Canada as part of a five-year deal announced on Thursday.

According to ESPN’s sources, the deal is valued at $350 million. The partnership includes in-game promotions and showing betting odds in fight broadcasts.

America’s top major leagues – MLB, NBA, NHL, as well as the PGA Tour – have all partnered with sportsbooks, as they’re looking to capitalize off the Supreme Court ruling permitting legal betting. Read more

Lasting heart problems rare in pro athletes after Covid-19

New study published in JAMA Cardiology, suggests that heart problems are uncommon in athletes who’ve had mild Covid-19 and most of them don’t have to be sidelined.

The research involved 789 pro athletes from the U.S. and Canada who play in major league football, hockey, soccer, baseball and men’s and women’s basketball. A total of 460 athletes (58.3%) had prior symptomatic COVID-19 illness, and 329 (41.7%) were asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. Less than 1% of athletes in the study were found to have heart inflammation. Read more

NBA’s season at the midpoint. Which teams’ schedules will get easier (and harder)?

The NBA has successfully reached the midpoint of the 2020-21 season with the All-Star break. The league has released a schedule update for the second half of the regular season, which runs through May 16.
