Global sports betting market sees unprecedented growth

The sector’s market size grew from $172.9 billion in 2020 to $194.6 billion in 2021, according to a new analysis by Safebettingsites.

Despite the losses caused by the COVID pandemic, betting and lottery markets have grown, according to the report.

The factors behind this growth include the legalization of these activities in numerous regions of the world, as well as the rapid expansion of online platforms. Another driving force is the development of esports, which has increased the demand for businesses that allow betting on these events. Read more

Google becomes FIBA’s first women’s-only global partner

Google has signed a sponsorship agreement with the governing body for basketball to become ‘Global Partner of Women’s Basketball and the Fiba Women’s Basketball World Cup’.

The partnership will launch with the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney, Australia on September 22, where Google will be the Exclusive Presenter of the All-Star 5, recognizing the best players of the tournament.

“FIBA is determined to further build women’s basketball and take it to the next level, and we are delighted to welcome on board Google as a Global Partner for the women’s game. We are excited to work with such a prestigious brand with whom we share the same strategic goals in regard to women’s development,” said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. Read more

New York Yankees to invest in AC Milan

The MLB franchise and a Los Angeles fund will be investing in the renowned Italian football (soccer) club AC Milan.

The Yankees have joined forces with a group of investors led by LeBron James to purchase a 10% stake in the Serie A club.

The new investors will join US private equity group RedBird, which is closing in on the €1.2bn acquisition of Italy’s football champions. Read more

Czech public broadcaster sells part of World Cup rights

Česká Televize, the Czech public-service broadcaster, has sold part of the rights to World Cup matches to commercial network TV Nova.

Under the sublicensing deal, Česká Televize will keep exclusive rights to air 32 matches, while TV Nova has secured exclusive rights to 18 games. The other 14 matches will be broadcasted by both companies.

The move is linked to necessary austerity measures. Read more

7 in 10 Australians say gambling ads should be banned

71% of Australians surveyed agree that gambling advertising should be banned from television, according to a study by The Australia Institute think tank.

Seven in 10 Australians (71%) agree that gambling ads on TV should be banned.

Those aged 60+ most often chose to “strongly agree” with a complete ban on gambling advertising, at 50% of the group.

1,003 people participated in the survey, which took place between 13 and 16 August 2022. The results show that Australians agree that junk food, gambling, alcohol and tobacco advertising on TV should be banned, and more agree than disagree that ads promoting fossil fuels should be banned.
