What’s the future of African betting market?

Industry leaders who met at the SBC Summit Barcelona discussed, among a number of other subjects, the opportunities and difficulties of Africa’s betting market.

The “Approaching Africa” panel examined various aspects of the market, including the role of cryptocurrency and the impact of regulatory measures. The discussion also involved the topic of the diversity of the continent, which is home to 54 different nations, a number of varying languages, which include regional dialects, and different regulatory approaches between English-speaking and French-speaking countries. Betfred fined £2.87m for AML and social responsibility failings

UK Gambling Commission said the bookmaker Betfred failed to protect its customers.

The operator was penalised for social responsibility and anti-money laundering failures, including one person being allowed to lose £70,000 over a 10-hour period one day after opening the account.

Leanne Oxley, the commission’s director of enforcement and intelligence, said: “This is a further example of us taking action to investigate and sanction alarming failures.

“We expect this gambling business and all other licensees to review this case and look closely to see if they need to make further improvements to demonstrate active compliance. Where standards do not improve, tougher enforcement will follow.” Read more

Apple Music replaces Pepsi as Super Bowl Halftime Sponsor

Apple Music has been named the official sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show this season, after Pepsi ended the decade-long partnership with the NFL.

It has also been announced that Rhianna will perform during the show at Super Bowl LVII, which will take place February 12, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona. Read more

Billie Jean King and Kevin Durant invest in League One Volleyball

American women’s volleyball league startup LOVB has raised $16.75 million in a Series A funding round.

League One Volleyball, which was created in 2020, secured funding from Billie Jean King, Kevin Durant, Chelsea Handler, and David Blitzer, among other investors.

Professional volleyball in the US continues to grow in popularity with girls’ participation in the sport ranked second only to track and field in 2021-22. Read more

NFL to celebrate players’ diversity with helmet decals

The league will honour players of diverse nationalities and cultures with a new initiative.

Over 200 players, coaches and executives will celebrate their heritage with international flags and decals on their helmets and pins on clothes.

NFL players will wear helmet decals celebrating their nationalities or cultural heritage with over 50 nations and territories being represented. Read more
