Russian parliament approves changes to betting laws

The new bill will allow Russian authorities to introduce ‘limits on types of sports events that can be wagered on’. It will also include an ‘increase on financial obligations of Russian sports betting licences’.

Russia Duma accepted the Bill 647044-7 that will significantly change betting laws in that country. Licensed sportsbooks will only be allowed to accept bets on sports events organised by official domestic or foreign governing bodies. The Kremlin is also going to expand its quarterly 5% GGR tax charge on international bet types. Read more

Governor Cuomo invites all MLB teams to play in New York

Major League Baseball has managed to start its 2020 season, which had to be shortened due to the COVID-10 pandemic. However, the league is still in trouble after more than a dozen Miami Marlins players and staff members tested positive for the coronavirus.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo came up with a proposal that could be a solution to this difficult situation: New York could become a bubble that would host the games for MLB teams, especially those from the most affected states.

“New York state could host any Major League Baseball games that any teams want to play and they could play those games in our stadiums,” Cuomo said in a briefing on Tuesday. “New York state has one of the lowest infection rates in the United States.” Read more 

Virtual MLB fans appear in empty baseball stadiums

Cardboard cutouts of fans at the venues? That’s clearly not enough for FOX Sports, which decided to take its MLB broadcasts to another level by employing augmented reality to create virtual fans in the stadiums.

CGI supporters and fake crowd noise will replace empty stadiums during dozens of games that are to be broadcast by FOX this season. Fans are, of course, not allowed to attend the games in person, due to the COVID-19 crisis. Read more 

Engagement in NBA 2K helped the league generate revenue during lockdown

NBA is back now, but it certainly had to survive a lot of uncertainty during the COVID-19 crisis. What kept the league revenue coming in?

The league could count on e-commerce sales and royalties from the NBA 2K game during the period of suspension.

NBA gets more money ($157m per year) from 2K, which is the game’s publisher, than from any other single sponsorship or licensing deal.  Read more
