Japan considers expanding legal sports betting

The government of Japan has been holding talks about sports betting liberalization, according to the Financial Times.

The regulations considered by Japanese policymakers, which are related to betting on football and baseball events, could create a market worth $65 million. The move would likely help the country shore up finances battered by the pandemic.

Currently, Japan allows betting on only four sports: horseracing, cycling, and motorboat and motorcycle racing. Read more

Premier League in talks to avoid TV rights auction

The English Premier League is counting on the UK government’s approval to scrap its upcoming domestic media rights auction.

The authorities’ approval would allow the league to extend its present TV deals worth £1.5 billion a year with Sky, BT Sport, Amazon and the BBC. Such a solution would mean that English football’s top division’s clubs would see no decrease in the annual revenue they have received from domestic broadcasters since 2019, and would eliminate the risk of the rights values dropping in an auction.
