STATCORE’s eye on handball part 12: Superliga

Big battle in Głogów, too many misses penalties for the players from Kalisz – this was another great match-day for the PGNiG Superliga, for which STATSCORE is the official stats provider. Let us take you on a quick tour via the main stats.

Górnik Zabrze – Gwardia Opole 32:25 (14:14)

This weekend Górnik Zabrze players wanted revenge for the last season’s sensational lost in the quarter-final series against Gwardia Opole. They executed their plan very well and won 32:25.

Gwardia fought on level terms in the first half which ended with a draw. In he second half Górnik showed their skills and scored 7 more goals than their rivals.

Adam Malcher and Mateusz Zembrzycki saved 14 throws, but it didn’t save their team  from failure. Malcher have saved 113 throws this season. Gwardia had 16 missed throws during the whole match. Also the shots on target statistic (46-30 for the home team) shows that this match was won by the better team.

Górnik Zabrze is one of three teams (along with Azoty-Puławy and VIVE Kielce) who haven’t lost a home match this season.

Energa MKS Kalisz – Piotrkowianin Piotrków Trybunalski 24:29 (12:15)

Energa MKS Kalisz lost 6 of their last 7 matches in the PGNiG Superliga. Last week’s win against Pogoń Szczecin gave them joy, but only for a moment. This week they were back to their losing ways against Piotrkowinain Piotrków Trybunalski.

Why did Piotrkowianin win this match? Well, Marcin Schodowski and Piotr Swat are a big part of that.  Schodowski saved 10 throws (36%) , while Swat scored 8 goals with an 80% efficiency.

Energa MKS Kalisz still has big problems with their 7-meter throws. They scored 4 goals out of 8 penalties they had this match (for this season 31/54 – 57.4%)

MKS Zagłębie Lubin – Orlen Wisła Płock 19:29 (10:17)

For the second time this season and the first time in a home match, MKS Zagłębie Lubin, scored less than 20 goals during 60 minutes of play (this was also the case in their away match against Chrobry Głogów)

With that statistic it’s almost impossible to win a match, especially when you’re playing against last season’s runner – up, Orlen Wisła Płock. When you add to this 18 turnovers and 33% efficiency from the 9-meter throw line – you can be sure that the loss will be big.

For Orlen Wisła Płock it was the 18th win in a league match against Zagłębie, in a row. After this match they are still in 3rd place in the league table.

Dawid Dawydzik got three 2-minute suspensions. This season he has been penalised 20 times (most in the league).

Wybrzeże Gdańsk – Arka Gdynia 33:27 (16:12)

A Local seaside derby in PGNiG Superliga. Wybrzeże Gdańsk played against Arka Gdynia and won their 6th match of the season. Marcin Lijewski’s players deserved the three league points.

It was fantastic performance by Wojciech Prymlewicz. Wybrzeże’s winger scored 8 goals out of the 8 throws he made (5 penalties scored).

Was there any statistic that could tip the balance towards a Wybrzeże’s win? Yes, their 9-meter throw efficiency – Wybrzeże 14goals / 20 throws(70%) – Arka 7 goals / 17 throws (41%)

Mateusz Zimakowski got a 2-minute suspension in this match and is the only goalkeeper who has been penalised twice this season.

Stal Mielec – Pogoń Szczecin 27:33 (13:16)

Surprise in Mielec. Stal lost their home  match against Pogoń Szczecin . For the away team it’s the first win after 7 league losses in a row. They scored 33 goals – the same number as in the last away league match against Stal (win 33:22).

Stal fans can be really surprised. After a home win agqainst Arka Gdynia and a really good match against PGE VIVE Kielce, they expected that their team would take an easy 3 points.

Pogoń played really well and were better in most of the statistics :

Goalkeeper Efficiency – Stal 23%, Pogoń 34%

Throws efficiency – Stal 57% , Pogoń 72%

Fast attack efficiency – Stal : 50%, Pogoń 80%

Throws saved – Stal : 10, Pogoń 14

Stal have conceded 392 goals in 12 matches – it’s almost 32.7 goals per match.

Azoty Puławy – MMTS Kwidzyn 26:17 ( 12:12)

Only 5 goals scored during 30 minutes of a handball game? This statistic is really frightening. MMTS Kwidzyn couldn’t find a way to score goals during  the second half of their match against Azoty-Puławy.

The 17 goals scored by MMTS is the second lowest number of goals scored this season (in round 5 Wybrzeże Gdańsk beat Azoty-Puławy’s goalkeepers 16 times).

Azoty-Puławy is the team with the lowest number of goals conceded this season – 293. In the next round the team from Puławy will play a big match in Płock against Orlen Wisła, and it will be a game for third place in the league table.

Chrobry Głogów – PGE VIVE Kielce 30:38 (14:20)

It wasn’t  a bad match for Chroby Głogów. Their players tried to make a stand and caused a lot of problems in this match against Vive Kielce. There was one main problem – the number of turnovers – Chrobry’s players lost 24 balls while last season’s winners just 12.

It was the best match for Artiom Karalek, since he joined VIVE. He scored 9 goals out of the 10 throws he made during the 60 minutes of the game.

Anyway, VIVE players should focus on throws accuracy. 12 shots off target – this is definitely too many for a team who are trying to make a big impact in the Champions League
