Meet Dariusz Łęczyński, Chief Data Officer at STATSCORE

Providing sports data from thousands of real-time events held around the world – that’s a complex and demanding job. What are the biggest challenges? What qualities does a person need to succeed in this type of job? Dariusz Łęczyński, Chief Data Officer at STATSCORE, responds to our questions!

– Darek, could you first tell me about your role at STATSCORE?

– Sure, and I will rather stick to the short version, as knowing myself I could make this answer too long. Generally speaking, I am responsible for the growth and development of our sports database along with the quality assurance of what we already have and provide to our partners. Our vision is to build the biggest sports data centre in the world, and in order to do that we need to keep expanding our coverage, yet at the same time, as a Chief Data Officer, I am responsible for finding ways of utilizing the data we store.

– What qualities should a person have to successfully work with collecting sports data?

–  Our sports data department consists of several teams responsible for different types of work even though all are sports data related. Still, a person working in our department, no matter which team, needs to love sports and the numbers, as these are the basics. Only if you have these two, you will never feel like you’re working in our company – you will just be living your passion! Sure, we need to be precise and have a deep focus on details at our work, but the main thing is to follow the passion and only these kinds of people keep joining our STATSCORE family.

Passionate about sports? We may have a job for you!

– STATSCORE is providing amazing amounts of data to its partners, which as we know, is a highly complex and responsible job. What are your greatest challenges?

– This is a great question as for many our work is like working in a factory with repetitive operations, easy, huh? The thing is, it’s not. There is a huge responsibility on our shoulders for the data to be correct in every single game, every single competition and the sooner the better. Imagine thousands of games we manage monthly, with this feeling at the back of your head that we need to avoid mistakes, so our partners can rely on our data. It’s challenging yet stressful at the same time knowing that unfortunately, it’s much easier to report a mistake in one game than appreciate the hell of a job in hundreds of others. We are like football referees, the less they talk about us, the better we are.

We are like football referees, the less they talk about us, the better we are.

– 2020 was a very unusual year, also for the sports-related businesses. Has it changed anything in the ways in which your team works to provide the highest-quality data?

– It obviously did as at the end of March sports all over the world suddenly stopped. Our daily routines had to change instantly, but we are very flexible – just like the whole company – and reorganized. Managed to expand our database with loads of archive seasons so our partners could receive even deeper i.e. H2H comparisons. I am a big fan of lean management myself, and we used “the given time” the best we could to keep growing stronger, even under those unexpected circumstances.

– We’re seeing a growing demand for the data in the market. Are STATSCORE’s products ready to meet it?

– This is true and we kept saying that for a long time now, that data is the key and will have a huge impact on the market not only in the future but already now. We have got two products strictly connected to the raw data we collect ourselves and both are perfectly tailored for the needs of the demanding both betting and sports industries.

Our SportsAPI consists of nearly 10,000 competitions we manage on a daily basis, and yet we are nowhere near the end of our expansion road. At the same time, our ScoutsFeed product is a super-fast live data delivered by our highly trained scouts directly from the venues, so the betting platforms/sportsbooks can use the feed for live betting odds creation. Up to 2,000 events per month we offer is just the beginning.

– As we both know, STATSCORE is a company that has been built on a well-defined vision and specific values, with great emphasis on passion, teamwork, and self-development. How do these values influence the everyday work in the company?

– We are aware that the vision we follow is challenging and there is a long road ahead of us. Yet, there are two main aspects that keep us pushing forward with smiles on our faces: already mentioned passion for sports and the appreciation of the quality of the data coming from our partners. From this place, at the end of this conversation, I wanted to thank every single person working in the sports data department for the effort and engagement. We work and act as a team, as a team we are perceived, but the team is built of exceptional individuals. Thank you guys, and let’s keep pushing!

– Thank you!
