Keep calm and manage your stress

Can you imagine your life without stress?  Smiling all day long? Nobody can make your blood boil, picking flowers in a meadow? 🙂 Is it even possible?

„To be totally without stress is to be dead” wrote Hans Selye, one of the fathers of stress physiology.

You may be surprised, but we need some stress in our life. Stress can have beneficial effects, it stimulates us to take action and forces the effort needed to exist (evolutionary legacy), can also contribute to our development and help us focus on setting goals.

IS STRESS A SERIOUS PROBLEM?

The problem begins when exposure to stress is too regular and too long.

This text is not intended to make you more concerned about cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and other conditions often caused by intense and long-lasting stress.

It’s about the best ways of coping with it, without the need to „count to ten” 🙂

5 METHODS FOR COPING WITH STRESS

Everyone deals with problems in different ways, it depends on many factors (personality, temperament, life situations, financial situations and other circumstances).

But there are some common and effective strategies for coping with stress.

Let’s take a closer look at 5 of them:

1. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

There is probably no one who needs to be strongly convinced about the benefits of regular physical activity – endorphins, reduction of muscle tension, brain oxygenation and many others.

So, if you do not have medical contraindications, sign up for gym membership, start jogging or just do some exercises at home.

Stressed? Have I been stressed? See for yourself how it works! 🙂

2. SUPPORT FROM OTHERS

Psychologist Irwin Sarason wrote „Good friends are good for your health”. Build relationships, communicate your problems and emotions, talk to friends and get support from them.

3. FIND A HOBBY

A well chosen hobby will relax you, help you to forget about your stressors. Maybe you had a hobby once and you’ve just forgotten about it due to being overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities and problems?

Take time for you, start with couple of minutes, but every day…

4. ANTI-STRESS NUTRIENTS

Avoid caffeine (let’s face it – some of us visit the coffee machine too often :)), nicotine and alcohol.

Invest in nuts, fatty fish, greens and a little bit of dark chocolate. Do not follow the rule that shows STRESSED as DESSERTS spelt backwards! 🙂

5. TIME FOR RELAXATION

Do things you find relaxing and enjoyable This list is very long: books, listening to/and playing music, drawing, painting, meditating, interaction with a pet, gardening, dancing, taking a nap etc.

You may create your very own way to manage stress and finally start seeing the brighter side of life, but be conscious that most of the things you worry about, never happen – it’s very relaxing 🙂
