Crazy facts about online betting

Bets won against all odds, incredible amounts of money gained and lost, underdogs becoming winners, boosting viewership, and unstoppable wave of legalisation… Well, the world of betting is certainly not a business-as-usual story! Learn more with STATSCORE!

Greatest football accumulator wins

Accumulator bets, also called acca, are popular with bettors because they give them a chance to win a lot of money from small stakes. Of course, there’s a downside to this: the more games you put on the betting slip, the harder it gets to win. Let’s take a look at some of the most impressive wins for punters betting on football.

Betting £100 on 6542/1 odds? That’s really optimistic, but one lucky Londoner pulled it off in November 2014 when he placed an acca bet on eight matches. What’s even more amazing, these were live bets with just 20 minutes left to play, and the teams he bet would win or draw were losing at that moment! The guy won £650,000!

Making £585,000 from 80p? That just can’t be true. And yet, a cautious football fan from Malta who would never place a wager of more than €1 each time, finally made it happen. He placed an enormous 19-match accumulator which, after a nerve-wrecking game won by Liverpool against Chelsea, fell his way!

When betting on underdogs pays off

Remember when the Greeks won EURO 2004? Wasn’t that amazing? Who would have predicted it?! Well, it turns out that some punters did!

The biggest winner was a 34-year old guy from Surrey in England. When the tournament was already underway, he placed €4,000 on Greece at 50/1 odds. And the more he saw them play, the more he believed they could do it. A few days later he added €8,000 at 10/1 odds. Finally, on the day of the final game between Greece and Portugal, he put down another €12,500! The Greeks’ improbable victory won him €332,625! Of course, at the end of the day, with such an unpredictable winner, the whole tournament turned out to also be a great victory for the bookmakers!

Who could forget the 2005 Champions League final when Liverpool pulled of an amazing comeback after losing the first half 0-3 against AC Milan? The odds were as high as 188/1 that the Reds could still equalise the game, and hundreds of Liverpool’s die-hard fans placed such bets. This game surely made most of them even bigger fans, as Liverpool managed not just to equalise, but to lift the trophy after a penalty shootout!

American bookmakers always win in September

September is the most lucrative month for US bookmakers. Why is that? Well, mainly because that’s when the American football season starts after a long break, and many fans are more than eager to wager on their preferred sport. Yet, though they may be great fans, they are not always betting experts – quite often they will simply bet on their favourite team. Moreover, at the start of the season neither the fans nor the bookmakers can really know how good the teams actually are, which sometimes leads to enormous point spreads and line movement.

At the end of the day, it all adds up to bring profits to bookmakers. In fact, in the past five years, Nevada betting organisations have earned more money in September ($190.3 million) than they have won in October and November combined ($190.1 million).

Amazing support for legalisation in the US

The wave of sports betting legalisation seems to be unstoppable in the US. According to data from GlobalWebIndex, 75% of Americans aged 21+ are in favour of legalisation, jumping to a further 90% when it comes to sports fans.

Americans would especially love to bet on NFL games (60% of sports fans, and over 85% of NFL fans), the NBA, and eSports. They would mostly like to place bets on the final results of games, but may express interest in more specific bets, such as total points in a game, total number of wins in a season or half-time results. The greatest motivators include potential financial gains, as well as sheer excitement and fun.

Betting also boosts viewership of sporting events. 6 in 10 US sports fans say it makes them more likely to follow the game on TV, and 40% say it would make them more likely to attend the game in person.
