Coronavirus is impacting sports. What does that mean for betting industry?

The coronavirus is rapidly spreading around the world and affecting the everyday life of millions of people. It forces businesses to suspend their activity, cultural institutions to cancel their shows, and sporting events to be cancelled or postponed. How does it affect sports betting? Learn more with STATSCORE.

How is coronavirus affecting sports?

The world of sports has been shaken by the outbreak of the disease. Major football leagues in Europe have been forced to suspend or postpone their matches. It is unknown whether the Serie A championship will be assigned at all this season, and whether the Champions League and Europa League games will go on. Some disturbing news is coming about professional players being infected with the disease.

This situation is, of course, not limited to football. In the USA, the NBA has decided to suspend its season, and the Japanese baseball league had to postpone its start. In Italy, all sporting competitions have been suspended. There are also growing doubts about whether the Olympic Games in Japan will take place this year.

Is betting business in danger because of coronavirus?

When there are no sporting events, there is no sports betting, obviously.

However, for the time being, the situation for betting companies doesn’t look that bad. First of all, many games are still being played, although they are held behind closed doors. The decisions to limit the number of fans at the venues or to hold games without fans have been made, among others, by Spanish La Liga and French Ligue 1. As long as these matches will go on, the betting will go on too.

Moreover, when fans won’t go to the venues and will have to stay in their homes, many of them will be looking not just for TV broadcasts of the games, but also for some engaging betting opportunities. And it’s worth adding, that betting websites can offer some of the best LIVE match tracking solutions which increase the fans’ engagement.

Will coronavirus affect betting odds?

The outbreak of the virus may have some influence on the odds offered by the bookmakers.

As many teams will be forced to play their games without fans, their home field/court advantage may be much weaker than before, which may be reflected with bookmakers’ decisions on how likely they are to win.

Moreover, there are cases of players, like Daniele Rugani from Juventus, who have tested positive for coronavirus, which will certainly influence the morale and attitude of their teams, let alone the probability of their games being played at all.

Online beats offline in the hard times

As the whole business world and industry is hit by the virus, online businesses will probably be affected less than the products and services offered offline. That’s why there is still hope for the online betting industry to keep going on.

Keep your betting business alive with STATSCORE’s trackers

Unfortunately, it is highly dependent on what is going on offline – the actual sporting games held at the venues and stadiums around the world.

Still, it’s worth remembering that there are hundreds of competitions around the world that have not been cancelled, and some regions are dealing better with the disease than the most hardly hit parts of the world. And even if there is no ‘traditional’ sport, there is still the e-sport and virtual sports that people can bet on.!

It is surely most important for the whole sporting world to stay safe and survive this crisis. Let’s not give up and try to keep this business going!
