2020 in sports – let’s check out the numbers!

COVID-19 pandemic has obviously been the main topic across the globe this year. And without a doubt, it’s been a very tough time for sports. Professional leagues all over the world had to suspend their seasons, while lots of people lost their jobs because of sports events cancellation. But this doesn’t mean that sport has stopped for the whole year. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting numbers connected to sport in 2020! Here’s STATSCORE’s summary!

26,424 – analysts estimate that this number of events will be held in December 2020. It is almost twice fewer than it had been estimated before the pandemic started.

The official 2020 Dakar Rally entry list included 351 vehicles and 557 competitors from 53 countries. This year the contestants had to cover the distance of almost 7,900 kilometres (5,000 km of special stages).

Algeria topped the medal table in 2020 African Wrestling Championship. They won 21 medals – 9 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze. Egypt won 26 medals but held the third place because of a smaller number of gold medals – 6

Denmark won the 2020 European Tam Badminton Championships held in Lievin, France. In the final game, they won against the Netherlands 3-0. During the group stage, Denmark won all 3 matches (against Switzerland, Wales and Latvia) winning all 15 sets.

2020 NBA All-Star Game was won by Team LeBron who beat Team Giannis by 157 to 155. It was the 69th edition of this event. The highest attendance was recorded in 2010 when the game was watched by 108,713 fans.

Women half-marathon record was beaten on February 21, 2020 during the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in the United Arab Emirates. Ababel Yeshaneh from Ethiopia ran 21,0975 kilometres in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 31 seconds. It is the best women result in history, run by women in women-only races (i.e. without male pacemakers).

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 750th goal in the career during a Champions League game against Dynamo Kyiv. The Portuguese player is also the first footballer, and the third sportsman, to earn $1 billion during his career.

Rafael Nadal won the Roland Garros Tournament equalling the record of 20 Grand Slam victories set by Roger Federer. During his career, he earned more than 132 million dollars.

Ronnie O’Sullivan won his 6th World Snooker Championships title in career winning against Mark Selby in this year’s final. It was his 28th appearance in the Crucible Theatre.

Peter Wright, winner of 2020 Darts European Championships received a cheque for 125,000 pounds for this victory. The prize pool for this tournament was 500,000 pounds.

255 players were selected in the 7 rounds of this year NFL Draft which was held between the 23rd and 25th of April. The first selected player was Joe Burrow, who will play as a quarterback for Cincinnati Bengals.

Armand Duplantis beat both outdoor and indoor world records in the pole vault. On 17th September in Rome he jumped 6 metres and 15 centimetres in outdoor competition and a few months earlier, on 15th February in Glasgow, he jumped 3 centimetres higher during the Indoor Grand Prix.
