Work-life balance – possible or not?

“We cannot be happy if we expect to live all the time at the highest peak of intensity.  Happiness is not a matter of intensity, but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony.” (Thomas Merton)

Have you ever felt that you are overloaded, stressed and chronically tired ?  Do you ever feel a lack of balance and harmony between your personal and professional life? If yes, maybe it’s time to take a closer look at why. Maybe it’s time to take a moment for some self-reflection.

We are all immersed in the tough reality of every day life and sometimes in a money centered way of thinking. That’s why we can become overwhelmed with our responsibilities. There are several methods that can help us to protect ourselves against burnout and exhaustion.

CREATE BOUNDARIES

Outside of work you should have time for family, friends and for yourself of course.

WHEN YOU HAVE LEAVE, TAKE YOUR LEAVE

Do not think about work, do not plan anything, just relax!

When you answer a business call on the beach you need time to switch off and get back into „holiday mode”, your holiday time becomes shorter and shorter, and the balance is broken. It’s the fastest way to become a workaholic.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Our bodies also need balance. After long hours in front of a PC, we need a break. To maintain this balance between mind and body, the STATSCORE team, takes part in many different sporting activities:
– Football league, where representatives of different companies compete with each other
– Participation in marathon
– Running competition (the longest distance is 115 km)
– Cycling
– Cross-country races
– Athletics (e.g. triathlon)
– Darts
– Badminton
– Tennis
– Table tennis
– Basketball
– Volleyball
– Golf
– Ice hockey
– American football

Even those at STATSCORE, who do not take part in sport, find plenty of interesting things to do, to achieve a balance between life inside and outside of working hours.

Some of us love healthy food, reading, taking photos, listening to music, playing percussion, climbing, going to the gym, practing Pilates, watching TV series, travelling, shopping (especially clothing sales 🙂 ), watching MMA, baking, playing guitar, playing video games, cooking or just eating what someone else has cooked 🙂

PLAN YOUR WORKDAY

Create a daily plan and prioritize, try to stick to this plan and accomplish your everyday goals. With better organization it’s easier to control the day and there is less probability to be surprised by totally unexpected tasks. To be able to deal with these unexpected task, build in some buffers. With a good plan, we can clearly divide our personal and professional life.

Awareness is the key. We should know our motives, when we know what we want, it’s so much easier to find that balance between our working life and social life.

DON’T BE LAZY

Use „DEVELOPMENT” as your motto.

Never miss the possibility to develop yourself. If you  feel good about yourself, if you are proud of yourself, you will be more likely to reach that harmony you’re looking for.

MAKE SURE YOU GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Be aware that when you’re tired, your effectiveness is lower. You need enough sleep to keep up that feeling of enthusiasm and energy. If you are not rested enough, you will spend more time on completing your tasks and even when you’re finished, the result won’t be the same as it would have been with a „rested mind” due to a lack of concentration. So to save time and work better, always try to work well rested.

Finding our balance isn’t easy, we should hone this skill every day. Brian Tracy wrote: „just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.”

We should try to find our own way to create this balance, and enjoy both our private and professional life.

Let’s take a walk, get some fresh air and think about it! 🙂
