STATSCORE’s eye on handball part 10: PGNiG Superliga

Another great weekend in the Polish top handball league – PGNiG Superliga for whom STATSCORE is the proud official stats and data provider. Find out more about all of the games below in our weekly analysis.

Energa MKS Kalisz – PGE VIVE Kielce 27:37 (12:15)

With every match that comes along, fans are wondering: “Maybe this time? Maybe today VICE Kielce’s winning -streak will end?”. And after every match the answer is ‘Nope, not today!’

VIVE won their 86th match in a row in the PGNiG Superliga this time against MKS Kalisz. Talant Dujszebajev’s players  scored more than 30 goals for the 10th time (this means that they have done this in every league match this season). In the 10 league matches they have played so far, they have scored 375 times (the 2nd best offensive team – Orlen Wisła Płock – have scored 51 goals less).

For MKS Kalisz it was their best result out of the last 7 times they have played last seasons PGNIG Superliga’s winners. Until this match, the home team had always lost against VIVE by at least 14 goals.

Orlen Wisła Płock – Piotrkowianin Piotrków Trybunalski 38:24 (19:10)

12 shots on target less than their opponents, 5 missed throws more, 17 turnovers, 36% efficiency from 9 meter. With these statistics it’s simply impossible to compete in a match against Orlen Wisła Płock

The first 10 minutes of the match gave the indication that Piotrków might be able to fight as equals (it was only 6:5 for home team) but between the 11th and 20th minute of this match Orlen Wisła scored 8 goals, while the away team beat Adam Morawski only once.

The best player of the match was Lovro Mihić. The Croatian player scored 8 goals with 100% throw efficiency.

MKS Zagłębie Lubin – MMTS Kwidzyn 23:21 (11:12)

Finally, after 7 losses in a row against MMTS Kwidzyn in the league, MKS Zagłębie Lubin beat this rival 23:21. 44 goals scored – only in 2 matches this season have teams scored less goals (SPA Pogoń Szczecin – Arka Gdynia 20:19 and Chrobry Głogów – MKS Zagłębie Lubin 23:19).

What’s worth mentioning about this match? 3 out of the 4 goalkeepers who played in this match had a save efficiency higher than 35%! This really is rare. Patryk Małecki (44%), Krzysztof Szczecina (38%) and Jakub Skrzyniarz (37%) showed their skills and restricted scoring by their rivals.

Chrobry Głogów – NMC Górnik Zabrze 22:26 (9:9)

Górnik Zabrze has still only one defeat (against PGE Vive Kielce) in this league season. This time out they got the 3 points in Głogów.

Only 18 goals were scored in the first half, but after the break both teams played a lot better.

Chrobry players were very inaccurate on this particular day. They had 12 missed shots during the 60 minutes of play, while Rastislav Trtik players only missed the goal four times.

SPR Stal Mielec – Arka Gdynia 40:32 (20:16)

It was a match between two teams that had only had one win each this season. On this day the Mielec players were better – they won against Arka Gdynia 40:32. Stal scored more than 30 goals in regular time for the first time in this season’s PGNiG Superliga. When was the last time they scored at least 40 goals? 13th of December, 2017 (40:38 against Gwardia Opole)

Despite the fact that the two top scorers in this match were away team players (Kelian Janikowski and Dawid Przysiek), Arka lost their ninth league match of the season.

Wybrzeże Gdańsk – Gwardia Opole 25:28 (13:12)

This match that was played on the hundredth anniversary of Polish independence and had a very special setting. The Polish anthem was played at the beginning and had both teams in special (white and red) shirts.

The teams adapted to the situation well and created a very good “spectacle” . Gwardia Opole won this away match against Wybrzeże Gdańsk, despite the fact that they were losing at half-time, and it’s now their fourth league win in a row.

Both teams had big problems with scoring goals from fast attacks, 3 goals out of 7 attacks for Wybrzeże and 2 goals out of 4 attacks for Gwardia – it a stat that doesn’t look really good.

Azoty-Puławy – Sandra SPA Pogoń Szczecin 30:23 (17:11)

Azoty-Puławy players wanted to show their fans that the last defeat and disastrous performance against PGE VIVE Kielce was just a one off. How? By winning against Sandra SPA  Pogoń Szczecin.

It was a job well done, the home team won 30:23 but there are still many things to improve. After this match, Azoty-Puławy, is still the team that haven’t lost a home match this season.

On the other side, Pogoń are still waiting for their first away win. Will they gain 3 points  in the next round? Who knows – MKS Kalisz are for sure a team within their reach.
